Following their qualification for the Round of 16 in the 2023/24 Copa del Rey over the weekend, Real Madrid's opponent is confirmed for the next stage. It turns out to be none other than city rivals Atletico Madrid.
Real Madrid advanced to the Round of 16 of the 2023/24 Copa del Rey after securing a 3-1 victory against lower league side Arandina last Saturday.
Despite implementing substantial changes in their lineup, Carlo Ancelotti’s team managed to comfortably secure a win, progressing to the Last 16 stage.
It has now been determined in today’s draw that the current holders of the Copa del Rey will face Atletico Madrid in the upcoming phase. The match will take place at the Civitas Metropolitano.
Los Rojiblancos made it to the Round of 16 after defeating Lugo in the previous stage. This sets up a rematch of the imminent Spanish Super Cup semi-final, where the two Madrid-based teams will clash this week in Saudi Arabia.
The dates for the eight Round-of-16 fixtures are not yet confirmed but are scheduled to be played next week, between Tuesday the 16th and Thursday the 18th of January.
It's important to note that Atletico is the only team to have defeated Real Madrid so far this season in La Liga.
Meanwhile, Barcelona have been drawn to face Unionistas de Salamanca. Xavi’s side made it through after a narrow 3-2 win over fourth-tier side Barbastro on Sunday to take their place in the next round.
Their next opponents are in the third division, along with Barcelona Athletic, but are below Rafa Marquez’s side and just three points off the bottom. However, they did beat the Mexican team 2-0 last time out.
